RNA VIRUSES AND DNA VIRUSES NAME AND STRANDS

RNA Viruses and DNA Viruses (Based on Nucleic Acid Type)

Viruses are classified mainly on the basis of the type of nucleic acid they contain, which may be either RNA or DNA. This classification is important in virology, biotechnology, and medical science because it helps in understanding viral replication and disease mechanisms.

RNA Viruses

RNA viruses contain ribonucleic acid (RNA) as their genetic material. Some RNA viruses possess double-stranded RNA, such as Reovirus, Wound Tumour Virus, and Rice Dwarf Virus. Most RNA viruses are single-stranded RNA viruses, including Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV), Influenza virus, Poliomyelitis virus, bacteriophage MS-2, bacterial virus F2, coliphage R12, and Avian Leukemia virus.

DNA Viruses

DNA viruses contain deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Many are double-stranded DNA viruses, such as Pox viruses, Coliphages (T2, T4, T6, T3, T7, Lambda), Herpesviruses, Adenoviruses, Papilloma viruses, and Polyoma virus SV40. Some viruses like Bacteriophage ΦX174 and M13 contain single-stranded DNA.
